Nitride is in the metal, not on the metal. From what I understand, it doesn’t add anything, it just hardens what is already there. It doesn’t add any inconsistencies to the surface, actually, it retains the surface better than not being treated.

What makes these match barrels, match barrels? SS and a nickel Teflon coated barrel extension?

I have a Faxon match flame fluted 16” barrel and it’s not all that impressive. Occasionally can hit 1 MOA 5-shot groups with handloads, but it’s usually more like 1.5 MOA. I still like the barrel but believing it to be “match” quality and paying more for it is something I won’t do again. Also ejects brass at 1-2 o’clock so I’ve had to tune the buffer and spring specifically for it.

Aren’t you not supposed to treat Stainless Steel barrels, as that introduces inconsistent surface geometries that ruins the whole point of using stainless to begin with? So why are they nitriding their barrels?
